Dear Editor,
A multi-billion dollar entertainment industry wants to move here and now is the time to welcome, support and negotiate with them.
I have lived in Hollister for over 20 years, and I have experienced good and bad economic times here. I believe the casino is going to bring us economic prosperity.
Immediate prosperity will include:
The building of the casino. It will create construction jobs for Hollister residents.
The operation and management. One thousands to 3,000 jobs will be created. If Gavilan College can set up courses in the operation and management of the casino, this will insure the majority of the high-paying jobs go to Hollister residents. Their incomes will for the most part spent in Hollister.
The potential millions of dollars in revenue the city and county will receive through the governor’s compact.
Long-term prosperity will include:
Construction, operation and management of the various motels, restaurants, gas stations and other businesses that will eventually be built around the casino and will employ Hollister residents.
Visiting tourists. Salinas has John Steinbeck. We have Marlon Brando. With an effective marketing plan, we can attract them to visit Hollister.
We will have big name entertainment in our back yard like the Oakridge Boys, Paul Rodriguez, George Lopez, and others.
A recent study showed that 70 million baby boomers will be retiring soon. Many of them enjoy gaming and the shows offered in the casinos.
I am retired. I visit Yosemite, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Hawaii, Florida and other places of interest, but I also enjoy the entertainment offered in both the Bay Area or Fresno Indian casinos. When I visit them, I do spend money for food, gas and lodging outside the casino in the cities nearby.
The Miwok Indian tribe belongs to the most physically and economically oppressed group in the history of our country, the American Indian.
They want part of the American dream. Let’s support them. It’s a win-win situation.
