I read the letter from Mr. Pierce (“Evolution is a ‘Theory,’ but Being a Christian Nation Isn’t,” Letters, Oct. 22) with dismay. It is obvious that at least some individuals are not getting a decent scientific education.
The definition of a scientific theory is different than the Webster’s dictionary definition. It is disgraceful that he was able to get through school without being taught that. A scientific theory is truth as well as it can be relied upon by man using scientific methods. Gravity, the revolution of the earth around the sun, germs cause disease, organisms are made of cells, are all examples of scientific theories.
As a science teacher I recognize that if students leave my classroom without the knowledge that evolution is the explanation for the so obviously changing world around us, I have failed them. Anyone given the opportunity to hear and understand all of the evidence supporting evolution would readily join the scientific community in asserting that it is the best explanation for what we observe.
