“Every time I read ‘development credits’ I cringe. In order for development credits from the county to the city to work doesn’t the city need to be healthy? You know if you own property in the county then you own property in the county and you abide by county rules and ordinances. Since when did we get to the position of guaranteeing property subdivision rights in the county?
I also wonder how it sits with property owners/developers within the city that will surely be impacted if the city decides to give county property owners development credits. Under the city’s current Growth Management Program, once we start building again, we will be limited to approximately half of what we used to build per year. So how will development credits work with the city’s current Growth Management Program? I would be much more willing to support any federal and state government assistance to farmers to farm.
I am also baffled as to why the Farm Bureau is so embroiled in the development issue. You guys are supposed to support farming not development. Make up your minds. Are you developers of land or farmers and ranchers of the land?”
“I saw the Jan. 7 Free Lance and was shocked to see that the Hospital Road crossing had been approved for a $5 million bridge project. This is a crossing that has been static since 1998. Prior to that, the county road crews replaced it every year for approximately $3,000 to $5,000. A low water crossing, such as the one on Southside Road, would have been an ideal solution at a fraction of the cost. Low water crossings are seen all over Monterey and other counties and are quite effective.
So I had to wonder, why is this happening?
There is a subdivision south of Ridgemark that for 20 years has been nixed for access reasons and the planning director wrote the General Plan so that the developer(s) would have to pay to fix the roads around this area.
I read Measure G a while back and thought I should take another look at it (and I highly recommend each of you to do the same). After you read through the first part of the initiative, which is mostly fluff, you will see the truth. It is not just a growth control initiative; there are several very damaging regulations to all county residents, young and old. So don’t think that since you live in town you’re not affected or that if you’re not a property owner you’re not affected. This measure adversely affects all residents of San Benito County.
Upon re-reading a draft of Measure G available at the county, I noticed that the language requiring the developer(s) to pay had been literally crossed out and rewritten so that the property adjacent to the zone is being assessed to pay for the improvements. These include, but are not limited to: Southside Road, Hospital Road, Cienega Road, Highway 25, traffic safety, bridges, etc.
The orange bridge at Southside Road was in dire need of replacement 20 years ago. Why replace it now? Why didn’t we get FEMA money in 1998? Why was FEMA abused in 1998? Is this another traffic improvement paid for by the taxpayers for ‘someone’ and his partner’s project?
People of San Benito County – we are getting bamboozled and it has been happening for years. Please open your eyes and look at the projects that have been built the last few years. Who has sold to big developers? Who has fast tracked projects through planning? Who has received reimbursements for developing? Who has modified and pushed contracts through the system and who is benefiting from all of this?
The latest project is the Lima/Lompa property. Who is behind this purchase and the language in Measure G?
Citizens, you have the same information I have available to me. Please educate yourselves and make your own decisions.”
