A county and community are made up of many important parts that
ultimately determine its quality of life.
Certainly planning, government, infrastructure, laws, climate
and even the landscape itself are part of the equation.
But good people
– especially those with a dream to start their own business as a
labor of love and the precious volunteers – are the key.

Sometimes they are forgotten or overlooked, especially these days when we tend to put so much emphasis on money-related matters.
That wasn’t the case at Saturday night’s San Benito County Chamber of Commerce Dinner Dance.
We take special pride in saluting our own Denise Cauthen-Wright, advertising director at the Free Lance, on being named Woman of the Year for her many volunteer efforts.
Kurt Bridwell should be equally praised as Man of the Year for his long list of tireless efforts throughout the county, especially the Boy Scouts.
San Benito Bank and its many active volunteer employees, represented by Ed Stevenson, Jack Hance and Will Sutton, should also take a big bow, along with Megan Guerra, owner of Main Street Bistro, and Sheila Stevens, owner of She’s.
It’s also a good time to thank Theresa Kiernan, Executive Director of the Chamber, Katherine Vais, Chamber president, and everyone on the Chamber board who are responsible for so much of the Chamber’s success and activity in the county, including Saturday night’s gala.
The results of their work and effort stretch from their downtown office in Hollister to every nook and cranny in the county.
About 300 people showed up at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club, including many official dignitaries, to honor the recipients.
Actually, everyone in San Benito County should give these folks a standing ovation for taking the time to help so many and for picking our county to pursue their dream.
