The Cubs used a three-run burst in the sixth inning to defeat the Marlins 6-1 to remain in first place in the San Benito County Babe Ruth League.
The Marlins won the first game the teams played, 3-1. David Jacquez went all seven innings to pick up the win for the Cubs Tuesday.
Anthony Macadaeg, Austin Schmidt, Jacquez and Isaiah Zamorez knocked in runs for the Cubs (11-2).
Defensively, Devin Quintana had a couple nice catches in the outfield, and Zamorez was solid at shortstop.
The Marlins (7-6) scored their only run in the second inning. Josh Huracha had a two-out RBI to bring in Michael Garcia.
“We’re just trying to stay consistent,” said Marlins coach Naz Martinez.
The Cubs got two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Joey Covey shut the Cubs down in the middle innings before the Cubs broke the game open in the sixth inning with three runs.
“They are a tough team,” said coach Orlando Quintana. “We had to go with our ace pitcher to shut them down. We have to be hitting on all cylinders to beat anyone in this league. All the teams are pretty even. We just have to be sneaking away with games.”
The Cubs, who have eight games left before the season ends, defeated the second-place White Sox in strong pitching duel Saturday.
