Thumbs down: For San Benito County, which is considering cuts that would imperil the area’s beloved 84-year-old 4-H program. The county budget committee, which includes Supervisors Richard Scagliotti and Pat Loe, recommended cutting $70,000 from the local University of California Cooperative Extension, which runs the program. Local 4-H clubs have given kids a wholesome activity to pursue for decades. Though the county is facing a $4 million deficit, officials should find the cash to keep this tradition alive.
