Dear Editor:
What promises to be a highly entertaining and enjoyable evening of music will take place at the Gavilan College Theater on Saturday, May 22, commencing at 7:30 p.m.
The South Valley Symphony has invited the quite popular and talented Mariachi Santa Cecelia to appear with the orchestra, marking the first time symphony conductor Henry Mollicone has performed with a Mariachi ensemble during his distinguished musical career. Likewise, this will mark the first time, to my recollection, that the orchestra has appeared with any Mariachi group.
Also appearing with the orchestra will be guitarist/composer Rick Vandivier who has found inspiration in influences that stretch from Andres Segovia to Pat Metheney to Jimi Hendrix. His performances have been described as daring, soulful and evocative. His recent appearance in the very recent Bach to Blues concert on April 23 at the Gavilan College Theater was warmly received. His most recent CD with Primary Colors with vocalist Nate Pruitt, extremely well known here in the South Valley, has been a popular best seller.
Scheduled over one year ago, this concert is being presented with a Mexican/Spanish flavor to our area in order to satisfy the musical tastes of not only regular concert goers, but the children and adults of Latino origin as well.
Mariachi Santa Cecelia was formed in 1995 and has performed throughout Santa Clara County. They are a very popular weekly attraction at the world famous Berryessa flea market in San Jose and are a highly entertaining group. We are indeed fortunate in having them be able to perform with the symphony inasmuch as their busy schedule leaves them very few open dates.
This marks the final concert of the 30th season for the symphony and will hopefully serve as a major fund-raiser for the orchestra and musical artists here in South County. Get your tickets early.
Al Navaroli,
Gilroy
