Hollister – Gun owners can pick up free safety locks today and tomorrow thanks to a mobile campaign distributing locks to every county in the United States.

Project Child Safe is touring the country in an effort to make American households safer for kids, according to Project Representative Bob Keyser.

San Benito County will get 2,100 gun locks and their accompanying educational materials when Project Child Safe makes its stop here today, Keyser said. As of this afternoon, the free locks will be available at the county sheriff’s department, the city police department, and the county district attorney’s office, he said.

The program is in its sixth year, and this year has received a $30 million grant from the US Department of Justice to distribute over 12 million safety kits throughout the country. California will get 880,000.

Call the police department at 636-4330 or the sheriff’s department at 636-4102 for more information.
