Gilroy resident
Gilroy resident Carrie Lee “Bird” (Giuffre) Martens died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 in San Jose after a long battle with cancer. She was 45.

Mrs. Martens was born in San Francisco and raised in the Willow Glen Area of San Jose. She moved to Gilroy in 1980. She attended San Jose State University. She worked for more then 20 years as a fitness and aerobics instructor, most recently at Gilroy Health and Fitness, where she was fitness director.

She is survived by her husband, Dane Martens of Gilroy; her children, Sheena and Logan Martens of Gilroy; her parents, Thomas and Ada Giuffre of San Jose; her sister, Robin Denton of San Jose; and many other relatives.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Church in Gilroy. Burial will follow.

It was Mrs. Martens’ wish that everyone attending her funeral wear bright clothing (no dark colors) in celebration of her life, and to bring a photo of themselves so she will be surrounded by her friends and family. Those bringing photos to the funeral are asked to arrive early so that all photos can be placed around the casket before services begin.

Arrangements are under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy.
