Starting tonight with an 8 p.m. showing of “The Ride” at Dunne Park, family-oriented movies will be periodically screened outdoors in parks throughout Hollister.
Hollister resident Carol Thomas, who recently acquired a projector with “drive-in capabilities” from the national Evangelistic organization Worldwide Pictures, will show the movies. She first used the projector – which she said is valued at $34,000 – for a screening at the county Juvenile Hall facility June 14.
There will be showings the first two Fridays in July as well, including an undecided Spanish language movie at Calaveras Park July 11.
Thomas hopes to eventually show movies – which she called “very positive, very family-oriented” – regularly once a month.
“It’s like old times, going to the movies,” Thomas said. “I’ve wanted to do it for four years.”
On a recent trip to Mexico, the Christian ministry Thomas had accompanied used a similar projector and showed movies in a lot. She looked into obtaining a projector for use in Hollister and realized she could acquire equipment from Worldwide Pictures and she would only have to pay $425 for the projector case.
She removed the passenger seat in her motor home and replaced it with the projector. She currently has eight movies and is looking to get more. There is no admission charge, snacks will be provided and there will be a raffle.
