The Hollister Heat 14-and under ‘A’ travel team stayed alive in the NSA Western World Series in Modesto with two victories Thursday. The Heat 14’s edged the San Jose Fury 5-3, then eliminated the Sacramento Dynasty 11-1. The Heat got up early this morning to face the California Grapettes at 8 a.m. at Rainbow Field.
“This is Hell Friday,” said Heat 14-and under coach Steve Grimsley, referring to a possible five games in 100-degree heat should his club keep winning.
Grimsley was concerned in the first inning of the game with the Fury.
“They hit four balls off the fence and only scored one run,” said Grimsley. “That’s a pretty good effort by our outfield.”
Sam Filice went the distance for the win and came into relieve Jordan Lee in the second game with the Heat leading 8-1.
Grimsley credited his whole team for “smashing the ball”.
Ashley Patton and Amanda Boyd each had doubles, while Kassie Kearns was “tearing it up”, according to Grimsley.
The Heat suffered its first loss on Wednesday, losing to the Mystix 6-5. The Heat had taken a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t hold on to it.
The tourney runs through Saturday.
