Dear Editor:
During a July 1 budget meeting, the Hollister City Council announced it will have to make hard decisions. In balancing a new budget, the City Council will need to trim and streamline (cut) city departments and personnel.
During the budget crisis meeting, Mayor (Brian) Conroy suggested the City Council waive taking its $100 a month raise members recently got.
To some it may seem symbolic since it only represents about $6,000 savings to the city. But, $6,000 here and $6,000 there begins to add up to real money. No Council member seconded the idea of waiving the raise.
Not surprisingly, Councilman Tony LoBue, always fast to second any motion to spend taxpayer money, didn’t offer a second to the motion of waiving his $100 a month salary increase. I guess LoBue would rather cut a city employee or service than waive his $100 a month raise.
If Council members feel the job calls for more in wages, they should make their position full time.
