Two people were killed in a fire that consumed a mobile home and a wooden addition in Aromas Sunday.

Larry Mederos, 49, and Dixie Mederos, 57, both residents of Pittsburg, Calif., were visiting family in Aromas at the time of their deaths.

“The cause of death was due to smoke inhalation and thermal burns due to the house fire,” said Detective Sgt. Wes Walker of the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department.

The California Department of Forestry responded to the fire at 700 Carr Ave., Apt. B, at approximately 3:38 a.m. Four people were in the mobile home at the time of the fire. While the resident and his girlfriend were able to abscond with minor smoke inhalation, the Mederos’s were unable to vacate and were found deceased in the wooden attachment.

“They were sleeping in the addition, and is probably where the fire started,” Walker said, which is presumably why they were unable to escape, he said.

The coroner’s office is handling the investigation of the deaths, while the CDF is investigating the cause of the fire.
