San Benito County Sheriff Curtis Hill is drawing almost as much
criticism as District Attorney John Sarsfield these days.
Much of the heat on Hill stems from a jail incident and other
alleged problems in the department from many years ago.
We’re not criticizing those who take Hill to task, even if it is
in the fairly distant past. He’s an elected official as county
sheriff and coroner and is subject to the taxpayers’ sentiment and
scrutiny.

But let’s take a minute to praise a job well done with Monday’s capture of Michael Yost in San Juan Bautista. Yost is suspected of robbing several banks in Salinas, Monterey and Watsonville.
Movies and television have distorted bank robbery into a funny crime or furthered a ridiculous sentiment that the banks have plenty of money and don’t mind being robbed.
Nonsense.
Bank robberies often turn deadly for innocent victims and at minimum traumatize bank employees and customers.
San Benito County Sheriff’s deputies played a key role in staking out and nabbing Yost – and the department drew deserved praise from the FBI afterward.
Hey, the guy apparently slipped away from the feds, Monterey County deputies and the Salinas cops several times.
Once he went on the lam in our county he was quickly busted.
We salute the good policework by Hill and his team in getting an alleged serial bank robber off the street and into jail before any innocent people were hurt or killed – which easily could have been in a San Juan Bautista or Hollister bank.
