The two-hour release from Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems production company has some great fight scenes with very stylish cinematography that closely emulates “The Matrix” films right down to tight glossy rubber suit worn by Kate Bekinsale (“Pearl Harbor,” “Much ado About Nothing” and “Serendipity”) who stars as Selene, a vampire warrior known as a death dealer.

This film is visually well crafted and borrows from several other movies. The rainy, near-colorless city of “Underworld” is very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s “Batman” and Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner.”

One of the most inventive thing that Director Len Wiseman does with this movie is he uses two classic movie characters, vampires and werewolves to basically retell the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet.

In stead of a blood feud between the Montages and the Capulets, you have a war between the vampires and the lycans. Lycans is short for lycanthropes (the actual clinical term to describe someone who believes he is a werewolf).

Selene, who has hated lycans ever since she was a young girl and they destroyed her family, has been one of the most efficient and hardened killers in the war against the lycans.

One rainy night she finds herself inexplicably drawn to a mortal man named Michael Corwin who is being hunted by the lycans for a reason no one except the lycans understands.

However, she knows that she can’t let Michael fall into their hands. As they make one narrow escape after another from the relentless lycans, Michael is bitten by one. Selene knows that a man who is bitten by a werewolf and lives, will become a werewolf at the next full moon.

Once Selene’s vampire family learns about Michael , they try to force her to kill him, but she can’t and their insistence that she kill him just drives her closer to him. Despite knowing that their relationship can never work, the two supernatural lovers refuse to give each other up.

It’s about this point in the movie where the plot and everything just seems to fall apart and devolve into nothing but a running gun battle between black clad vampires and lycans.

This movie is too violent for children and sensitive viewers with lots of disturbing images of metamorphosis and human deaths.
