One-hundred years of powered flight, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Ford automobiles will be celebrated at this Saturday’s fourth annual Hollister Air Fair and Open House.
“1903 was a busy year. There was a lot going on,” said Ruth Erickson, president of the Hollister Airmen’s Association. The group is sponsoring the event along with the Kiwanis Club of Hollister.
More than 3,000 people attend the show from all over the state to “come and see and experience and do,” Erickson said. The air show is free and open to the public.
The air fair and open house will feature static aircraft displays; antique small engines; antique military vehicles and vintage uniforms; radio-controlled aircraft and glider exhibits; antique and classic cars and motorcycles; Gavilan College’s aviation college; law enforcement and emergency vehicles and aircraft; and food and aviation-related booths.
“It’s hands on, and there’s things to see and watch for all ages,” Erickson said.
The fair begins at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. that will feature the San Benito High School Naval Junior ROTC color guard with members from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion present. Mayor Brian Conroy will give a speech.
A community member is recognized at each air show. This year, Hollister resident Jim Laws, who has been involved with local flight and the Hollister airport since 1939 will be honored.
The popularity of the air show is that people don’t have to be aviation experts to attend.
“Planes are wonders of the world – when you consider that people are flying with the birds,” Erickson said. “You don’t have to be a pilot to enjoy this.”
The air fair and open house will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hollister Municipal Airport. Details: 637-0987.
