Mission San Juan Bautista parishioners will serve a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community Thursday beginning at noon.
“We want everybody in the San Juan area to come,” parishioner Dan Reed said. “This is a community event. We’re looking for many people to show up, not just for those financially stressed but people looking for companionship who want to enjoy good food. Come down as a group and have a good time without the labor of cooking a meal. Have dinner with us.”
Previously, the holiday dinners were served at the teachers center, but this year Father Ed Fitz-Henry opened the parish community hall, the newly remodeled Casa Maria, located next to the mission.
The annual dinner is a tradition that was started by Mission San Juan parishioners 13 years ago.
“A group got together because there was a need in the community to provide this for the community and it just grew from there,” Reed said.
Last year 275 meals were prepared, and many of the diners were repeat customers from previous years, Reed said.
Dinners will be delivered to home-bound residents and anyone in the San Juan area in need of transportation will be picked up.
