Around the Water Cooler

Ruth Erickson: “It seems like he is a bully, he has been traded from other teams for the same reasons; he should be thrown off the Dolphins and be barred from playing professional football.”
Bill Mifsud: “No. There has been so much reported about this issue. As an adult Jonathan Martin should have confronted Incognito with his issues. We are talking about adults not children. Richie Incognito was the offensive lineman player rep and his teammates, most have sided with him. I am not pleased with Incognito’s chosen words to Martin but this should have been handled more in house.”
Mary Zanger: “Yes, so it seems. No crime like assault, harassment and rape has yet been reported. Reported mental ill health is not a crime. Societal issues loom large. How do we honor athletes? Are all athletes gentlemen? Are we all bullies sometimes? Misuse of power is too easy and tempting.”
Richard Place: “I’m sorry but I thought this was professional football and they were making millions. Let them tell their agent not their mother.”
Marty Richman: “Yes, the only way you can get away with saying things like that is if you are in a position of power or you rely on physical intimidation. Since Richie Incognito is not in a position of power, he relies on physical threats and insults. If he were a 5-foot-2, 160 pound, kicker he could never get away with it. Legally, you cannot talk to people in that manner in the workplace and you should not talk to them in that manner anywhere else, either.”
Jim West: “You gotta be kidding, the whole concept of American football is bullying and intimidation. The best bullies win, we give them trophies, parades and make them into national heroes. Incognito just doesn’t know how to pretend football’s a sport.”
Nants Foley: “I don’t know the man so I won’t pass a judgment on him.”
