It’s just like looking in a mirror
Sometimes, we see things on TV that resonate and strike a
chord.
It turns out that it wasn’t an episode of Dr. Phil or Oprah that
had me pondering my similarities with the person in the little
box.
It wasn’t even anything on the news (entertainment type or

real

) It was embarrassingly, of all things, a sit-com.
I can relate to

The New Adventures Of Old Christine.

Don’t even ask me what channel it’s on or what night and time,
because I don’t know. But I do know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for
some reason, in the role of Christine, is like watching myself with
a much more stylish wardrobe, even though there are not a lot of
parallels between her character and myself.

Sometimes, we see things on TV that resonate and strike a chord.

It turns out that it wasn’t an episode of Dr. Phil or Oprah that had me pondering my similarities with the person in the little box.

It wasn’t even anything on the news (entertainment type or “real”) It was embarrassingly, of all things, a sit-com.

I can relate to “The New Adventures Of Old Christine.” Don’t even ask me what channel it’s on or what night and time, because I don’t know. But I do know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for some reason, in the role of Christine, is like watching myself with a much more stylish wardrobe, even though there are not a lot of parallels between her character and myself.

For instance, Christine is divorced, but is still best friends with her ex. I am married and some days, I don’t even speak to this person who’s supposed to be my best friend.

She has one kid, I have two. She lives with her brother, but I haven’t talked to my sister in months. She dates. I am not allowed.

The thing that makes me chuckle and nod my head in understanding, is her interactions with the people around her. She always seems a little bewildered by her surroundings and struggles to try to maintain her cool in everyday situations that just shouldn’t be that difficult to navigate and yet she (and I) invariably find ways in which to screw them up.

Her “friendship” with the two blonde, slender soccer moms is almost too much to take for the shorter brunette and scattered Christine. They remind me of the Siamese cats in the movie, Lady and The Tramp, setting her up for failure and smirking when it happens.

The Soccer Moms are always in the know and no matter how many school meetings and functions I (and she) attend, we are always somehow left out of the loop and some very important information gets by us, so that we are the unwitting center of attention when things go awry.

I always seem to be the one who brings the cupcakes to the function that was at the last meeting, declared a “Less Desirable Choice.” Some nice carrot and celery sticks were supposed to have been on my platter instead of the chocolaty delights with the uneven frosting application, in the vain attempts to hide the misshapen cakes beneath.

I will never be the “Room Mother” type, even though as a kid, I lamented that my own mother wasn’t and vowed to be at every play and every game and I wish I could be.

Luckily, I have had a hand in raising some pretty understanding kids. They laugh when I do something embarrassing and grin at me from the sidelines and I am pretty sure they will vow not to be embarrassing parents. But on the upside, I can at least hope that I have given them a lot to laugh about later.
