Local author John Chadwell will be offering all seven of his novels during a book signing at Mars Hill in Hollister from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 21. Chadwell has made a career as a freelance copywriter and photographer. He has also written several screenplays. Four years ago, he began writing novels. His works range from a Christian-themed horror story (Werewolves of New Idria) that takes place in Hollister and the abandoned mining town, New Idria; a modern-day pirate story (Hunt of the Sea Wolves); science fiction, (Legends and Liars) about miners in the Asteroid Belt; a fact-based drama about a police officer who infiltrates two drug cartels (Major Crime Unit: Operation Casablanca); a historical novel (Pershing-The Soldiers’ General), and his two most recent works, Last Sunrise (a western) and The Kid and Wild Bill (sci-fi western).
San Juan book signing
The San Juan Bautista Historical Society and Native Daughters of the Golden West Parlor #179 will host a book release celebration in the historic Adobe located at 203 Fourth St. in San Juan Bautista. Author/curator Juliette Burton-Carvajal will discuss her newly published Artists’ Honeymoon: Rowena Meeks Abdy & Harry Bennett Abdy at Work and Play in Monterey & Beyond, 1910-1920. This engaging book is presented as a vintage photo album chronicling the artist couple’s first 10 years of marriage and travels around California. Noted Monterey Bay area photo archivist Pat Hathaway will share how he acquired a treasure trove of their unique century-old images depicting iconic California scenes, including many in San Juan Bautista. There will be a light buffet available at 12:30 p.m. followed by the author’s presentation at 1:30. Proceeds of the lunch ($15.00) will go toward the Adobe Restoration Fund.

Emergency preparedness fair
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hollister is hosting an emergency preparedness fair and open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The emergency preparedness fair at 1670 Cienega Road will involve such groups as the fire department, American Red Cross, the local ham radio organization and the Boy Scouts, while the Family History & Genealogy Center will be open to the public as well. Church member Gary Cameron is helping to run the event and mentioned how he expected to have such items as solar cookers and a parabolic cooker there, and expected the educational component to touch on areas like food storage and preservation, or water storage and purification.
Blood drive coming

Fortino named V.P at Rabobank location
Rabobank N.A. has named Phil Fortino as vice president, branch manager for its Hollister location, where he will oversee the branch’s operations. Fortino joined Rabobank in 2012 as a business banking officer and has served as business banking market manager for the bank’s North Coast division since 2013. Prior to launching his banking career, Fortino, a Hollister native, owned an award-winning furniture, appliance and home entertainment business for more than 30 years.
California Indian Market in San Juan
The 31st annual California Indian Market & World Peace Dance Festival is set for May 2 and May 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. near the San Juan Bautista School Soccer Lot, The Alameda and Highway 156. It will include Native American arts, crafts, dance, drums, foods, music. It will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Aztec dance groups. There is an educational benefit with a $1 donation. It is free to children under 12. Organizers will be honoring military veterans and Cinco De Mayo. It is sponsored by the Gilroy Children’s Center and San Juan Bautista Rotary Club.
