County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson is remaining quiet for now over reasoning to decline Marshal Robert Scattini’s offer to voluntarily reduce his $34,000 annual salary by 5 percent, while she noted how the board of supervisors had been meeting over the matter in closed session.
The CAO’s office about three weeks ago passed on the word that Scattini’s offer wasn’t necessary. It surprised the marshal, who was among the six elected department heads asked by administrators to voluntarily reduce their pay by 5 percent. Scattini’s cut would amount to about $1,700 in savings for the year.
“I’m not prepared to discuss that yet,” Thompson said today. “As soon as we are, we are going to put a press release out.”
She pointed out how supervisors – who also accepted the 5 percent cut – have been meeting behind closed doors about the marshal.
Scattini today said he did not want to comment on any speculation surrounding the move by the CAO’s office.
“They haven’t even told me what it’s for,” Scattini said.
At times in the past, though, some officials have broached the idea of closing the marshal’s office, one of four left in the state. Thompson also declined to comment when asked whether that was on the table.
Administrators’ request to the elected department heads and 11 other appointed department leaders followed implementation of a voluntary time-off program for other employees that calls for the maximum amount of leave amounting to 5 percent of their respective salaries.
