Charles “Bill” William Sciutto died suddenly from a massive heart attack on March 15 at his home in Santa Paula. He was 90 years old.

Bill was born in Salinas and attended Hollister High School where he was the valedictorian of his graduating class. He graduated from the University of California Berkley in 1936 and earned a master’s degree in education from San Jose State University.

After graduating from UC Berkley, Bill began a long career in secondary education as a teacher, basketball and baseball coach, principal and superintendent.

Bill was an avid sports fan and loved to cheer for all the Cal teams as well as the Giants and Forty-niners.

Bill is survived by Leila Glover Sciutto, his wife of 13 years; his son Garfield Sciutto and his wife Louise of Carpinteria; his daughters, Luisa Haskell and Susanna Dado of Ventura; his brother Joseph Sciutto of Walnut Creek; grandsons Charles Sciutto and his wife Joy of Santa Barbara, Walter Haskell of Oakland, Joseph Haskell of Thousand Oaks, and David and Thomas Dado of Ventura; great-grandchildren Bill and Iva Sciutto of Santa Barbara; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Benetta Merner Sciutto, and his sister Ida Sciutto Tubbs.

A memorial service was held on March 23 at First United Methodist Church in Santa Paula.
