Some burn spots were starting to show up in the grassy part of the 400 block downtown owned by the city, so tonight council members will consider banning the use of barbecues at the spot where events are held frequently.
Council members at their 6:30 p.m. meeting will consider updating the city’s policy for use of the 400 block of San Benito Street to now include a provision that states: “BBQ’s, cooking, and generators are prohibited on the lawn.” It adds to a bullet-point list that includes 18 other rules such as the users having to be a local nonprofit organizations and a requirement for fencing around any event with minors.
City Clerk Geri Johnson said the idea for a new provision came about because the grass “has been burnt a couple times,” though she declined to name the events at which it occurred.
“We don’t want burnt holes in the grass,” Johnson said.
The previous policy for the use of the 400 block had been adopted in 2001, according to city records.
