The Hollister City Council tonight will consider approving a contract with a local engineering firm to evaluate the feasibility of replacing 12-inch water mains that have been dubbed “weak spots” in the city’s water system for their propensity to fail.

If the $18,700 contract with San Benito Engineering and Surveying, Inc. is approved, the firm would identify alternatives and costs of replacing the lines that run underneath San Benito Street from Nash Road to Fourth Street and along Fourth from San Benito west to Line Street.

A staff report said that “numerous line breaks” have plagued the area for years, forcing emergency repairs and road closures along the well-traveled route.

San Benito Engineering and Surveying, the report states, is “a local firm with a strong familiarity with the (water) line.” The proposed water main replacement project report would be completed by March 15, 2011, according to terms of the proposed agreement.

The council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St.
