Why are so many small businesses failing in San Benito County? Excessive taxation plus burdensome regulation is all that the Council of Government’s directors seem to know.

COG’s Directors’ decision last month to approved the 2005 SBC regional transportation plan environmental impact report reminds me of the captain of the Titanic being warned of the iceberg dead ahead and ignoring the warning.

COG’s decision is a victory for tax-and-spend government, for bigger deficit spending, rewarding wastefulness, and for making SBC less business-friendly than it already is.

Notwithstanding my warnings, COG’s directors decided to stay the course – steering the same direction as previous COG boards did – straight into the insolvency of Chapter 9 bankruptcy, regardless of how many small businesses they kill.

Saying that my objections were irrelevant does not make them so. Time will tell. But what are we doing to our children and grandchildren? What gives us the right to ruin their future?

The history of the last century proved that Marxist-Leninist policy cannot give a society a sound, sustainable economy. Apparently COG’s directors have not learned history’s lesson, so they are condemning us to repeat history, as they heap new taxes on local businesses to show just how Marx and Lenin’s philosophy can work here in America.

And we are letting them do it.
