The Si, Se Puede! Learning Center is hosting an opening ceremony
for its community garden today from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the
Villa Luna Apartments, 850 Hillcrest Road.
The area includes a garden bed, a mural and other new
landscaping.
The students, with the help of volunteers, started working on
the garden Feb. 28 by priming and cleaning up the area. On March 5
and 6, the volunteers and students worked on landscaping and
painting in preparation of today’s opening ceremony. Mayor Victor
Gomez and Nants Foley, of San Benito Bounty, were expected to
attend.

The garden will be used to teach students about local and healthy foods, to stress the importance of resource conservation through techniques such as composting and to emphasize the importance of community and collaboration.
Throughout March, the students will be participating in other service events in dedication of Cesar E. Chavez, whose birthday is celebrated March 31.
Other upcoming events include a Si, Se Puede! Learning Center annual Scholastic Book Fair March 22-24, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., March 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., March 26 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and March 27 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Books will be on sale as well as baked goods and student art work.
The students from Si, Se Puede are also partnering with the San Benito High School Associated Student Body in “Exercise for Diana” March 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The kids will participate in a day of exercise and healthy eating at the San Benito High School track. The students will invite local health advocates, farmers and entertainers to join them in a day of walking, dancing and exercising. All proceeds go to the family of SBHS freshman Diana Magana, who has been diagnosed with cancer. All walking participants will be entered into a raffle to win a variety of prizes.
