Our first Red Phone call of the week came from a woman who
wanted to know what was going on with the Kentucky Fried Chicken
sign on San Benito Street. The sign once marked the location of
KFC, but since the facility burned down in 2003, it has simply
marked the location of a vacant lot. Since Colonel Sanders has a
new home on McCray Street in Hollister, our caller was curious why
the old sign was still up.
Our first Red Phone call of the week came from a woman who wanted to know what was going on with the Kentucky Fried Chicken sign on San Benito Street. The sign once marked the location of KFC, but since the facility burned down in 2003, it has simply marked the location of a vacant lot. Since Colonel Sanders has a new home on McCray Street in Hollister, our caller was curious why the old sign was still up.

The Crimson Crusader made a call to Hollister Development Services Director Bill Avera to find out why the sign was still up. Avera said the city has been working with the property owners, Bob Cain and Todd Renz, to demolish the site of the former KFC, including the sign at issue. The lot may be considered for future development after demolition, but Avera said he didn’t know for sure when that might be.

“It has just been a matter of us getting our ducks in a row,” Avera said Tuesday. “But the sign will come down soon.”

The Crimson Crusader will continue to follow up on this issue in coming columns. So, fret not, dear caller, our caped hero is on the case. Expect to hear more about the removal of this sign.

More evil traffic lights

Our next Red Phone caller of the week, a Hollister man who is always on the go, called the Crimson Crusader to report what he believes is another troubling traffic light. Our caller said the traffic light at the intersection of San Benito Street and Fifth Street was a bother. He said the timing of the light was off and that the light gave preference to those motorists crossing San Benito Street, instead of the motorists crossing Fifth Street on San Benito Street, a main city thoroughfare.

The Crimson Crusader did some digging and found out that Caltrans is responsible for this traffic control device. After a quick chat with Caltrans Public Information Officer Jim Shivers, the Crimson Crusader was promised that Caltrans would look into the timing issue of the traffic light. Shivers also told the Crimson Crusader that drivers should make sure to pull all the way up to, but not into, the intersection in order to properly trip the signal light.
