Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, on Monday pulled papers to run for the newly numbered 20th Congressional District.

The district, formerly the 17th before political boundaries were redrawn in the wake of the 2010 U.S. Census, retains all of Monterey and San Benito counties, as well as parts of Santa Cruz County. The 20th also picks up portions of southern Santa Clara County around Gilroy.

Farr has represented the area for the past 19 years.

Candidates must return papers by March 9 to be eligible for the June 5 primary election. With the new open primary system, the top two vote-getters will face a run-off in November, regardless of political party designation.

Farr also completed the optional Fair Campaign Practices pledge, and encourages all others seeking office to do the same.
