Dear Editor,

Born and raised in Hollister, I didn’t know much about the world and the Bay Area when I ventured off to study at UC Berkeley. Berkeley, known for its liberal views, filled me with book smarts of the different gradations of democracy.

Now coming back to Hollister, I feel that it’s more conservative with established leadership and wants to keep its small town feel. It’s great to come back, and I wish I would have sooner since houses are more expensive.

What I don’t like about Hollister is that it wants to be like the movie “The Truman Show.” Everything is perfect and pure without the need of any outside influence. But the conservative thought here is not allowing us to plan for future growth or to cater to the needs of our residents. We don’t have enough major brand dining facilities, entertainment and jobs. We have one theater and soon we will no longer have a sit down 24-hour restaurant. And the last time I checked, Cal-jobs didn’t have enough job openings.

So, what’s wrong here? Maybe it’s just me, but we need services people. Don’t tell me it’s the moratorium because last time I drove down San Benito I saw plenty of vacancies.

So why don’t we have this? A good part of it would be to the conservative thought here. The same thought that had Measure G on the ballot. The same one that built the empty parking structure. It’s the same thought that built this group that wants to push the No. 1 growing industry in the state, gaming, out of town along with its restaurants, entertainment and jobs!

C.R.A.P.S. should stand for Church Represents a Poor Solution. If this group is so scared of what gambling will do to this community, why don’t they go after Friday night bingo? It’s gambling isn’t it? And ask yourself, have you really won any good money on those “rip offs?”

So, if it’s not going after gambling, what are they really opposed to? Crime we have. Drugs we must have or why else would the high school justify locker searches, right? Oh yeah, finally traffic. We have that because our leaders failed to plan. Again.

Basically, the conservative thought here has created a rat race that will not provide for the goods or services or even to adequately prepare us for future events – consequently, not wanting to accept such a community changing events such as a casino. Do they really think we are happy not having stuff to do? Do they really think we like commuting 50 miles when we could have a closer job?

A casino will give us a wide variety of food and entertainment and – since we already have gambling in town – a wider selection of gaming. Oh yeah, not to mention jobs.

This group likes Hollister likes this. You can change the “c” in C.R.A.P.S. to conservatives and really get my flow. Do you like Hollister like this? Do you want change and more things to do?

If it ain’t the casino that will provide things for us to do, what else are they proposing?
