A local Boy Scouts troop received $1,000 from Corbin Motorcycle Seats & Accessories at Monday’s Hollister City Council meeting to help replace nearly $1,000 in stolen flags that the group lost during this year’s motorcycle rally.
Mike Corbin, the owner of the Hollister business, presented an oversized check – as well as a regular-sized one – to the troop members.
“We’re all working together to keep Independence Day alive,” Corbin said.
Mayor Ignacio Velazquez thanked Corbin for his donation. The Boy Scouts also presented Corbin with a plaque thanking him for the funds.
“You’re a very important part of our community,” the mayor said to Corbin. “You have stood up for our Boy Scouts.”
The local Boy Scouts in recent years have made it a tradition to place American flags throughout downtown on certain patriotic holidays. The flags had been used around the city during this summer’s July motorcycle rally – the first sanctioned biker rally since 2008 – and the scouts kept them out until they went missing. Later that month, four suspects were arrested on charges of theft.
The troop went to the council in September to request that the city reimburse them for the cost of the flags.
Corbin said he was “very proud” to help the Boy Scouts. He said he hoped the money would go toward the flags and nothing else.
“Don’t spend it on Xboxes!” said Corbin to the troop.
