Hollister council members Monday opened an application process to fill the District 4 seat left vacant by former Councilman Roy Sims’ abrupt resignation.
Sims, who stepped down at the last meeting, moved outside of his district and was forced to resign from his seat. Sims was elected in November to one of four council seats joining the mayor on the dais. The District 4 seat was the only contested council race outside of the mayoral race.
The open application process was announced at Monday’s council meeting when City Attorney Brad Sullivan reported out of closed session.
“The position will be filled until the general election in 2018,” Sullivan said, “whereupon the two-year term will be voted on at that time so that the districts are maintained, that we have two (elections) at a time every four years.”
Applications will be accepted from Tuesday, March 21 through Friday, April 7 at 5 p.m. Applicants are expected to provide a letter of intent, as well as a resume.
City Clerk Tom Graves said the applications and resumes should be submitted via email.
“The letter should include why they believe they should be appointed,” Graves said Tuesday morning. “We anticipate there will be a council meeting on April 17 at 4 p.m. to interview some candidates.”
Graves said the plan is to hold interviews from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The council would then go into closed session and announce their pick at 6:30 p.m. during open session.
“The appointment would be held until November 2018,” he said. “At that time, whoever runs for the position, it would be a two-year term to get the term back in rotation.”
