HOLLISTER

At Monday’s Hollister City Council meeting, newly sworn-in members Victor Gomez and Ray Friend are set to make their recommendations for commission members while Mayor Eugenia Sanchez will appointment her peers to several panels.

Gomez will be appointing a planning commissioner and Friend will appoint an airport advisory commissioner. Gomez will choose between two applicants to replace Friend on the planning commission. According to a city staff report, Robert Gonzales and Gabriel Torres have applied for the open position. The term will expire on June 30, 2010.

The airport advisory commission has three vacancies, according to the staff report. Frederick Meyer, Dennis Osorio and Douglas Hooton all have terms that expired with their council member who appointed them. Hooton recently informed the city that he must resign from the commission and city staff recommends Meyer be reappointed so the meetings can continue.

The parks and recreation commission also has a vacancy due to the city removing former Commissioner Don Kelley. He had been on the commission for the last eight years and was recently removed from that post by the council due to a perceived conflict. City staff will be advertising the open position for applicants.

Some of Sanchez’s major appointments include seats on the Council of San Benito Governments, the Inter-Governmental Relations Committee, the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, the Governance Committee, the Solid Waste Committee, the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee, the San Benito County Local Solid Waste Task Force, the Fire Task Force and the Revenue Sub Committee.

Departmental liaison positions also must be filled. Positions left open due to departed council members Monica Johnson and Brad Pike are those for administration, fire and community development.

Other items on the agenda:

The city also is set to adopt a resolution to voice its support regarding the placement of a Veterans Cemetery at Fort Ord in Seaside instead of in Santa Nella.

The council meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Hollister City Hall, 375 Fifth St.
