Dear Editor:
In response to the story regarding Brian Conroy’s attendance, I feel compelled as a citizen of Hollister who resides in his district to offer support for his term in office and his many positive achievements. Brian Conroy took office at a difficult point in time and, with patience and perseverence, worked with other council members to rid the city of inept and incompetent staff and management. He positively responded to my many phone calls and e-mails and represented my interests and those of my neighbors when my son and his friends were struck by a car while crossing Meridian and Recht streets on their way to school. As a result, we now have a four way stop sign at that intersection for which I am grateful.
He worked to bridge a divisive and acrimonious communication gap between the city of Hollister, San Benito County government and the San Benito County Water District. There is still work to be done here, but genuine progress has been made and civil discourse has been established.
Mr. Conroy and I do not agree on many issues (vote Republican!), but I believe we have earned each other’s respect.
Overall, I am very pleased with the job he has done representing our district with the time that he has been able to commit as our elected Councilman. Frankly, I don’t see any point in taking him to task on missed budget hearings this late in his final term. He doesn’t have a perfect record, but he certainly has accomplished some good things for his constituents in the time that he has served.
Mike Smith,
Hollister
