Douglas O. “Doug” Moran died on April 11 at Hazel Hawkins Hospital in Hollister. He was 96.

He was a lifelong resident of San Benito County since the age of two, when his parents Cecil and Lillie Moran moved west to California from Nebraska in 1910. The family purchased bare land in the Fairview District and later established apricot and prune orchards. With the untimely death of his father in 1932, Doug continued the family orchards for many years.

Doug was an avid sports fan having been a Haybaler football running back and track hurdler during his high school years under the instruction of Hollister’s well-remembered coach Andy Hardin. He remained active in sports as a volunteer, assisting the athletes, officiating and as a timing judge for their competition events for many years.

Doug was a past member of the First Order of DeMolays, past member of the old Twenty-Thirty Civic Club; member of the San Benito County Farm Bureau, former Enterprise 4-H leader; member of the San Benito County Historical Society and Hollister United Methodist Church. He was a member of the California State Guard serving during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Moran, of Hollister, son Gary and daughter-in-law, Elsa Moran of Hollister, grandchildren Brian Moran and his wife Stephanie of San Diego, Debbie Moran of Menlo Park, nephew Bill Flint of Durango, Colo., sister-in-law Sylvia McIndoo of Temecula, cousin John Melendy of Soquel and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Violet Flint.

As per Mr. Moran’s wishes there will be no services. Private burial will be in the family plot at the IOOF Cemetery in Hollister.

Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home and Gavilan Hills Crematory.

Donations are preferred to Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation c/o Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home.
