Seven people were displaced from their Matulich Court home Tuesday night and one of them was injured in a fire contained to one bedroom, according to a Hollister Fire Department captain.

The fire in the 200 block of Matulich Court started around 9:15 p.m. and was started by an unattended candle, said fire Capt. Tim Schneider.

A 30-year-old man sustained a “substantial” cut to his right arm when he threw a brick through a window while trying to suppress the fire from the outside, Schneider said. He was transported to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, but Schneider was unsure of his condition.

The most significant damage to the 1,400-square-foot home was to that bedroom on the home’s south end. The heaviest smoke damage was in the hallway closest to the room, while there was smoke damage to the rest of the house as well, he said.

The Hollister Fire Department, Hollister Police Department and the city’s code enforcement division responded, he said.

The local American Red Cross chapter has aided the family since the fire occurred.
