Dear Editor,

On Ground Hog Day, a pleasant lady called from Las Vegas wanting my views about an Indian casino being considered for our county. Immediately, I told her I hoped it would not happen; that it was a conspiracy by people unknown to use Native Indians as a front for illegal gambling.

Slot machines have not been legal in California for over 50 years. They should not return under the guise of Indian rights.

The promise of huge state and county taxes is blindsiding. The profits would come from the hides of 98 percent of the customers, most of whom cannot afford to be losers. Let’s not be involved with crime. Our elected officials should turn the idea down flat !

The lady said she understood my position and thanked me for my time. Then she asked my birth date, I told her March 7, 1921. She laughed pleasantly and said I sounded much younger. I told her flattery would get her nowhere.
