The San Benito County Health Department, Emergency Services, and Environmental Health Services Offices will be closed today so the departments’ employees can help with the mass vaccination clinic at the Veterans Memorial Building.

The move to close each department was approved by the board of supervisors Tuesday in a 5-0 vote. Clinics by the health department have contributed 3,142 vaccinations to the community, according to the staff report.

Because of budgetary reasons, the departments do not have enough personnel to cover both the mass clinic and the normal departments’ responsibilities, according to the report.

“In order to have staff at the clinic, it will be necessary to close the health department, emergency medical services and environmental health offices,” the report said.

The offices will be reopened the following day.

“The health department continues to be challenged by reduced funding and available resources to meet the community’s health needs,” the report said.

The free flu clinic is available to residents that are ages 6 years and above. It is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at the Veterans Memorial Building.
