There is still time to register the kids for San Benito County Library’s summer reading program, “Reading is a Picnic.”
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, participants must have a library card and read books that are checked out from the library.
The program is free and offered to children and young adults who are 6 years old or older.
Librarian Jo Wahdan said they have 70 children who have signed up, but they would like to see the number increase. Registration is being extended through June 30.
“We had over 100 kids last year,” Wahdan said.
On average, during the summer months 40 to 60 children will attend the reading progam, Wahdan said, adding the reason for that is many families are on vacation.
“But that’s OK, they can participate and read their books at home,” she said.
In the past, children were required to write a report on every book they read, but, with more than 100 children participating in the program, it has become difficult.
“We ask them to share a story about one of the books they read, but they don’t know which one we are going to select,” Wahdan said.
The program is intended to encourage kids to use the library while keeping up with their reading skills throughout the summer.
“They come and learn how to locate material to do reserach at that young age, they need to learn,” Wahdan said. “Besides, it’s a lot of fun to come to the program.”
Reading is a Picnic begins today and runs through Aug. 7. The program’s hours are 7-8:30 p.m. at the library, 470 Fifth St. For more information, call 636-4107.
