Geocache enthusiasts gathered at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreational Area for a day of searching for the hidden treasures in 4-by-4s in the Upper Ranch area of the park.

The event April 13 was free, with a free lunch provided by the Hollister Hills Off Road Association.

Participants gathered to register their teams from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., before setting off for a day of hunting. Geocaching is a type of treasure hunting in which participants use GPS coordinates to find hidden items. A website devoted to geocaching, www.geocaching.com, allows those interested to type in an address or zipcode to find nearby places where people have hidden items.

A search for Hollister turns up thousands of listings, including information on when the items were first placed and when they were last found.

During the Hollister Hills event, participants used 4-by-4, high-clearance vehicles to move around trails that are difficult to access with a traditional car. While the staff at the park encourage geocaching, the Saturday event was also set up to show people they can participate in the activity while staying on existing road ways and trails.
