Transition is crucial
The transition from backswing to downswing is an area that a lot
of my students seem to be confused about. Due in part to that
confusion they will tend to hurry the downswing sometimes without
really completing the backswing. Remember this statement. The
downswing begins from the ground up. The upper body creates the
backswing the lower body initiates the downswing.

The transition from backswing to downswing is an area that a lot of my students seem to be confused about. Due in part to that confusion they will tend to hurry the downswing sometimes without really completing the backswing. Remember this statement. The downswing begins from the ground up. The upper body creates the backswing the lower body initiates the downswing.

Once the backswing is completed all that remains is to unleash the energy stored up. To start down, turn your right knee – if you are left-handed your left knee – towards the target. This motion will begin to start your hands down into the ball and towards your target.

The upper body creates 80 percent of the speed in the golf swing; if the lower body does not start first on the downswing it will never be able to catch up and will have to stay behind to keep the upper body from pulling you off balance.

So let’s put the focus during your practice session on the right knee. Take your address position, take your right foot and lift up your heel so that the weight is on your toes. Your right leg should feel like a spring, as a matter of fact that is how it should work.

First take some practice swings to get the feel. Don’t let your heel touch the ground during your backswing. When you start hitting balls your trigger for your downswing should be your right knee turning towards your target.

When your lower body starts the downswing it will give your upper body a place to balance over. With nothing to balance over, your upper body will find a way to keep you from falling over unfortunately, it won’t look much like golf.

Remember what it was like learning to ride a bike, all you had to do was learn balance. Once you had it, it was a lot more fun, learning how to transition from backswing to downswing in the right order will make golf a lot more fun. There is no such thing as a bad golfer, just untrained ones. Play well.
