Seeing is believing
Here’s a question. How do you judge the distance when you have a
putt, a chip or a pitch shot? There is really only one way
– with your eyes. No matter what else you do, you have to judge
the distance by looking from your ball to the hole, then your brain
makes the calculation on how hard to hit the ball to cover that
space.

Some people have natural (for lack of a better term) eye/hand coordination and some don’t. Having the ability to judge distance is something you can learn. First you need to recognize what distances “look like.” You can practice this at home or at work or just about anywhere.
What you have to do is this: At home or at work get a tape measure and measure the distances to say the TV at home and the front door (you need a straight line view to each target) and any other object you see often. Learn what these distances look like. If you know what 25 feet looks like, you will learn to know it when you see it on the golf course.
Remember what Tiger Woods said when he won the PGA – that he just putted to the pictures. If it is 12 feet to the TV and you have a 12-foot putt, just putt to the TV. And don’t forget, good players stare at the target and glance at the ball, that’s how you “feel” the distance.
