The groundbreaking for the new, 41,500-square-foot San Benito County Courthouse will be held Monday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m.

The ceremony will begin at the Board of Supervisors’ chambers at the corner of Fourth and West streets, with introductions, brief remarks and a visual presentation.

The new Chief Justice of California, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, is scheduled to attend the ceremony, as is William C. Vickrey, administrative director of the courts and Ronald G. Overholt, chief deputy director.

At 2 p.m. the ceremony will move from the chambers to the construction site across the street for the ceremonial groundbreaking at the former site of Fremont School.

A statement from the Judicial Council of California called the ceremony “a significant project milestone marking completion of the design phase and the start of the bidding phase.

The new courthouse will feature three courtrooms and one jury assembly room that can also function as a hearing room. Scheduled for completion in fall 2012, the project will also provide at least 80 on-site parking spaces.
