San Juan Bautista – The Anzar High boys basketball team scored a 50-30 win over the visiting York Falcons on Wednesday. But, given the fact that York only recently formed their boys’ squad and isn’t yet affiliated with any league, the game was considered an exhibition contest and it will not count toward the Hawks’ record.
Even though the Falcons are a new squad, they played relatively well against Anzar, themselves a very young team.
Both squads started off a bit sloppy as the first two possessions of the game were cut short by turnovers.
York scored first but Anzar’s Scott Benson came right back with a drive into the lane that resulted in a bucket plus a trip to the line. Benson’s free throw missed but Brent Ramos went up strong to get the rebound and put it back in to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
The Falcons took a 6-4 lead shortly after that but Anzar once again responded as Nick Romero found Benson under the basket with a beautiful pass that resulted in an easy bucket.
Back and forth the two teams went for the rest of the first quarter and, at the end of the game’s first eight minutes, the score was knotted up at 13-13.
The second quarter was a totally different story. Anzar cut down on their turnovers, moving the ball well and making good passes in transition. The results of their improved play in the second quarter speak for themselves as the Hawks outscored the Falcons 17-4 to take a 30-17 lead going into the break.
One of the second quarter highlights came when Romero found himself in a tough spot on the baseline just before halftime. Romero had n where to go and none of his teammates were open so he elevated over his defender, faded back and released a shot that caught nothing but net on its way through the cylinder.
The third quarter looked a lot like the first as turnovers once again came into play for both teams. The Hawks managed only six points to York’s five in the third quarter.
Anzar started the final quarter of play with some crafty defense that led to easy fast-break points. But York’s Brian Krupp was also working hard on the defensive end as he picked up some good blocks and pulled down the majority of his team’s rebounds over the course of the final eight minutes.
“I’m glad we had the experience of playing a varsity team like Anzar,” said York head coach Kyra Shugars, whose program has only four games of total experience. “I knew it was going to be a tough game but it was fun for us.”
Anzar was led by Ramos’ 17 points, followed by Adrian Monroy’s 13. Romero had 11 and Benson ended up with six.
York’ stop scorer was Krupp, who finished the game with nine points while teammate Chris Chandler had seven, as did Ben Elmore.
“Considering that we only won one game all of last season, we’ve come a long way already,” said Anzar head coach Ed Cecena, whose team will host Cypress Grove on December 20. “We really took our lumps last year. This season, the guys are a bit bigger, a bit stronger and they’ve had a year under my system. They understand what I expect from them and it’s starting to show out on the court.”
