New beginnings, ends at SBHS
Transitioning from summer mode to school mode can be a difficult
challenge for most, if not all, students. It usually hits you
around the last week of summer, when people’s moods change and you
go shopping for school supplies and clothes. So how do you cope
with the fact that you cringe after you hear the phrase
”
Back to school?
”
The solution is very simple
Sleep is the problem most people face. Getting up early is
always hard, but there is an art. Make sure you get to bed early.
Soon you will get back into the habit and be able to get the sleep
you once enjoyed.

For the incoming freshmen, it was even harder. All last week, Link Crew prepared a freshmen orientation for them. The program allows upper classman a chance to serve as mentors to the incoming class, showing them the campus and just offering moral support to the students. Link Crew is a great way to get involved in school and help the freshmen get to know the very large buildings we call San Benito High School.
During the freshmen orientation, we played games with the freshmen to get to know them and form a bond with them that they will be able to cherish all through the year. As Link Crew members, we are a guide for them during their fist year at the high school.
As I played these games and looked in their faces, I saw myself. I saw my whole high school life flash before my eyes. I remember my first day of freshmen year and being scared out of my mind. Luckily, my older cousin went there, and I was able to hang out with her. But I soon met my best friend, and we are still going strong.
I’d like to pass on some advice for the incoming freshmen. I know that some Link Crew leaders didn’t really help them around. But don’t worry. If you ask someone for help, we’ll give it to you. Kids at the high school are not mean. We will not make fun of you, or trash can you. I have only seen one person get canned before, but that’s because his friends were just cruel.
When I woke up Monday morning, it finally hit me; while some kids were waking up to their first year of their high school lives, I was waking up to the beginning of my end.
