Three San Benito High School students were selected as winners in Union Bank of California’s sixth annual Young Artist Contest. The theme this year was Hispanic Heritage Month and the three students submitted artwork that reflected the culture.
Julie Moreno and Crystal Perreira, both 16, received second-place honors for the 16-18-year-old category. The students were honored at a reception at the Steinbeck Center in Salinas Dec. 4. They received $500 each for their entries. Adriana Mariano, 18, won third place in the same category. She received $250.
Perreira’s drawing included a skull reminiscent of day of the dead sculptures and a pyramid surrounded by bright colored flowers. Moreno’s second-place piece showed a woman with a colorful headress against a bright blue background. Mariano’s sketch had a woman in native garb sitting with a leopard.
The contest was open to students ages 12-18 with two entry categories. Seven other students from Monterey county also won. The artwork of 50 finalists and 15 honorable mention winners was also on display the day of the reception.
“The educational component of the contest was one of the most important features of the contest,” said Rossina Gallegos, the vice president and community development officer for Union Bank. “It provided an oppourtunity for youth of all ethnic backgrounds to learn about the culture of children from other countries with whom they interact every day…Projects like this are also great motivators for children to explore their artistic talents and consider possibilities for the future.”
