– The San Benito Health Foundation’s dental department will hold
its seventh annual Give Kids a Smile Day on Friday, Feb. 22 from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. Parents can bring their children ages 0-12 years for
a free dental screening, and fun activities for children will be
available, such as puppet shows,
storytelling, coloring and more. A visit from the Tooth Fairy is
also expected. The health foundation is located at 351 Felice Dr.

Crafters needed

HOLLISTER – The Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign War Post #9242 is looking for crafters for their spring craft show, March 15. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St.

Cost for vendors is $40 for an 8 by 10 foot space. A table and two chairs will be available if needed.

Community Pantry to hold car wash

HOLLISTER – Community Pantry will hold a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Sunnyslope Medical Center, 930 Sunnyslope Road. Funds raised will help buy food for the needy in San Benito County.

DMV busts document mill

SALINAS – Investigators from the California Department of Motor Vehicles arrested Jose Gonzalez Melano, 51, in Salinas last Jan. 31 on suspicion of forging counterfeit identity documents.

The felony bust occurred at about 7:10 a.m. after a months-long investigation that began with a tip about a fake ID and license mill operating out of a Salinas-area home. Undercover investigators purchased fake licenses and other IDs in the Bay Area, leading to Thursday’s arrest.

Transitional home has room

HOLLISTER – Bridge of Hope, a faith-based transitional home, is accepting new clients.

Bridge of Hope offers a transitional residence offering safety, dignity and structure for women. It emphasizes spiritual and emotional growth and support, while offering a way to make a successful transition back to their families and society.

Residents must pay a $500 per month fee.

Club Ed tutors available

HOLLISTER – San Benito High School Club Ed tutors are available to work with high school students in grades 9 through 12 in a variety of subjects. Tutors work one on one with students Monday-Thursday between 3 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Some tutors are bilingual. Oriana to hold spring rehearsals

HOLLISTER – The Oriana Chorale will hold weekly rehearsals each Monday for the next three weeks beginning at 7:15 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Rehearsals will be under the direction of Bruce Olsted and the chorale will be singing a medley of songs from Broadway musicals and Frostiana. All singers are welcome. Nomination time for Baler Hall of Fame

HOLLISTER – The Baler Education Foundation is seeking nominations for the Baler Hall of Fame. Those selected will be recognized at an induction ceremony April 19 at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club. Library board to meet

HOLLISTER – The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library board will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21 beginning at noon in the Barbara Memorial room at the library, 470 Fifth St. This meeting is open to the public. For more information, call 637-1794.

Hollister symphony “tag-a-longs”

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Symphony Group has announced a new “Tag-a-Long Series.” for 2008. The group is offering two bus trips to San Francisco for those who would like to have lunch in the city, go shopping, visit a museum or attend the symphony (tickets will be purchased that day.) The dates inlcude Thursday, February 28 and Thursday, March 27.

The bus will depart Dunne Park at 8:30 a.m. and arrive at St. Francis/Union Square at 10:30 a.m. The return trip departs from Davies Symphony Hall at aprox. 4 p.m. and will arrive at Dunne Park around 6:30 p.m.

Free income tax service available

HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers of low to middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 12 through Thursday, April 10, volunteers will be available by appointment only to those who need help preparing their taxes. Appointments can be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. Appointments will be held at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St.

Participants should bring in all tax documents they receive in the mail, last year’s tax return and all relevant information on income and expenses. Volunteer counselors are not trained to assist in preparing tax returns that report business, rental or partnership income.
