Dear Editor:

Tom Elias’ article “Is brave GOP talk all a bluff?” published in the Free Lance on July 13 mostly quotes Democratic consultant Gary South on his opinion of President George W. Bush running in 2004. I hope that since the electorate woke up and realized we needed new leadership in California. Maybe, just maybe, they will see that the GOP might have more of the values we want as a country than John F. Kerry is able to give us.

Once again in 2004, we cannot get the Democratic Party-controlled state government to pass a balanced budget. Over the past four years, the population grew by 21 percent and the state revenue grew by 28 percent, while the state spending grew by a whopping 40 percent. We eliminated their leader ex-Gov. Gray Davis, but the remaining tax and spend politicians of the Democratic Party still don’t get it! We will have to show them again at the ballot box. I’m not sure that the majority of Californian’s are able to see that the people that they have been voting for are not acting in their best interest.

The current Democratic Party is not my father’s Democratic Party nor mine for that matter. My first vote was as a Democrat, and I voted for JFK. If running today, JFK would be to the right of President Bush. How his brother Teddy got so far left I cannot imagine. They obviously had different views on how our country should be governed.

It might be that the GOP campaign spending in California is a waste. Or maybe the people in California do want a change. How do they want to align themselves – with those that continue to tax the work force beyond belief or with those that want to reduce spending and strive for a balanced budget?
