Lanier S. Brady died Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Colony Park. He was 93.

He was born in Iola, Kan., on March 22, 1910. He moved to Modesto in 1919 with his parents and six brothers and sisters.

He graduated from Modesto High School in 1929 and did various jobs until 1931 when he became the manager of the first Safeway store in Modesto. He worked there for about nine years then went to work for the Department of Employment until he was drafted into the Army in 1941. He was honorable discharged as a staff sergeant in 1945.

In 1941, Lanier married at Ripon girl, Miriam Stahlberg and had their first son, Michael in 1942. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he became the first city clerk and subsequently the first city administrator of Ripon in 1946. He worked in Ripon for 11 years. During this time another son, Timothy, was born.

In 1957, he left his job in Ripon after being offered the city manager position for the newly incorporated City of Hollister. Then in 1962, he accepted the same position in Brisbane, Calif. Finally, after retiring as city manager of Benicia, Calif. in 1972, he moved back to Modesto.

In 1973, his wife Miriam died of cancer and he went back to work at his brother-in-law’s business, Jack Hubbard Auto Parts and B&Z Automotive. He finally retired for good in 1999.

During this time, he married Sally Friedman, formerly of Ripon.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Friedman Brady of Modesto; sons Michael and Timothy Brady, both of Modesto; daughters Sharon Friedman Mulholland and Charlyne Smallwood, both of Modesto; sister Carol Hubbard of Modesto; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 30 at Colonial Chapel-Franklin & Downs.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1 at the Church of The Cross in Modesto. Burial was also Monday at Turlock Memorial Park.

Arrangements were made by Colonial Chapel-Franklin & Downs.
