Honor the rally tradition
A recent article titled

True cost of the rally hard to define

really has me bugged. Four months later and the city still
doesn’t know if money was made or lost? What kind of business
record keeping is that? The article states that the rally has been
historically held on the Fourth of July weekend,

and now generally held the weekend after the holiday.

How can you say

generally

when it’s only been on that weekend once so far?
Most of the business owners quoted said they make money on the
rally. Most agreed they made more when it was held on the Fourth of
July weekend, and when the bikes were displayed on San Benito
Street. The city lost money on the T-shirts, because people want
the ones the vendors sell more. Hellllooo? Is anybody at the City
listening? Mr. Mayor, you wouldn’t be taking such a risk with the
taxpayers’ dime if you did it right!
Many, many letters to the editor over the past three to four
years have said the same thing over and over, but you are not
listening. Put it back on Fourth of July weekend. Display the bikes
as tradition demands, put the vendors back on the side streets,
have some decent entertainment, and use some common business sense.
Use the information your

research team

came up with three years ago in Sturgis. Demand accurate
accounting for fees and sales taxes. Provide the means to do so to
the vendors. If you want to work with a team like Horsepower
Promotions, fine, as long as you are not just a puppet and demand
some control over things you know the citizens and tourists want.
Don’t kill the tradition; honor it!
