Kids Need Band Instruments; Here’s How You Can Help
Editor,
The Leadership of San Benito County Class of 2007 would like to thank Alice Joy for her wonderful article on the need of musical instruments for our community’s children at the Hollister School District’s elementary schools (“HSD Music Students Making Do With Few Instruments,” March 28).
As our class project we hope to get many donations of instruments and some cash for the schools to repair their many older instruments. We want every child who wants to learn a musical instrument has the opportunity to do so.
It has been shown that children who learn to play an instrument do well in their other studies also.
I just wanted to let you know that if someone wants to donate an instrument, they may drop it off at any Hollister School District elementary school or they can call Susan Chizek at 637-3255 to arrange for someone to pick it up.
If someone would like to donate money, they should make the check out to: Hollister School District Music Program and mail the check to: Hollister School District Office,2690 Cienega Road, Hollister, CA 95023.

COG’s Delay in Responding to Attorney’s Request No Surprise
Editor,
When Supervisor Pat Loe was chairman of the Council of Governments, it required three months for the staff to provide her with the schedules and occupancy rate of the various routes of the County Express.
If Joe Thompson receives his request for information within four months, he should be pleased (“Local Attorney Files Public Records Lawsuit,” March 29).
Mrs. Loe did report at one COG meeting that if 100 percent of the buses ran at 100 percent of capacity on 100 percent of the routes, County Transit would still lose money.
This was at a time when the two best routes averaged 14 and 12 riders. (The buses were near empty on the return trips.)
So COG goes out and obtains a 40-passenger bus. Did it replace one of the 15 or 24 passenger buses? Probably not.
The description of COG as a black hole for county taxes is accurate.
